Sabah History to be a Dedicated Subject in Schools Soon

While growing up, we don’t get to learn much about Sabah’s history at school but that may change soon.

Sabah or then North Borneo has a rich history but there’s very little information on it on our history textbooks. This is one of the reasons why the government is currently studying on making Sabah history as one of the core subjects in schools.

This is aligned with the commitment by the Parti Warisan Sabah-Pakatan Harapan (PH) alliance during the election campaign, as confirmed by State Education and Innovation Minister Yusof Yacob.

“We intend to carry it out but we need time to implement this” – Yusof Yacob

There has been frustration with the people of Sabah with the current history syllabus that’s too Malaya-centric and did not enable Sabahans to learn much about the State’s history.

This also led to the creation of North Borneo Historical Society in 2011 due to lack of information and access to Sabah’s history.

According to the government, Universiti Malaysia Sabah is currently doing the research and if all goes well, it will be rolled out within three years.

In the meantime, Sabahans and people from around the world can continue to enjoy the contents published by North Borneo Historical Society.
