North Borneo Sacred Legacy Photographic Exhibition at Sabah Museum Begins Today!

When was your last visit to the Museum? You should visit it soon because rare photos of North Borneo by Mr. Robert Knowles are currently being displayed.

Mr. Robert Knowles was the former Director of Customs in Labuan. During his duties he had the opportunity to travel and visit many places around Sabah with his Rolleicord camera which has dual lens, similar to the one shown below.

He donated more than 2,200 pieces of negatives to the State Museum in the late 1990’s. However, due to insufficient space at the museum, only about 120 photos were selected specifically for this exhibition.

His collection includes portraits, landscapes and scenes of the many towns North Borneo. The photographs were recorded during the era after the Second World War, from the late 1940’s until the 1960’s.

In 1957, he published a book called Jesselton, North Borneo showcasing photos of the town. If you don’t already know, Mr Knowles also once held the position as the Chariman of Sabah Tourist Association in 1960’s.

Entrance to the exhibition only costs RM2.00 but believe me that it will be worth it! The exhibition will be held until the end of April 2014.
